Knowledge Hub

Macmillan Centre for Learning has been delivering Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) qualifications since 2008. We have been delivering HNC Social Services (previously Social Care) and SVQ qualifications at SCQF level 7 to a variety of people-based services from Residential Child Care, Secure Accommodation, House parents in Hostels, Educational Assistants, Home Care Supervisors etc.  As a Centre, this delivery spans across Scotland from the Northeast to the West Coast of Scotland.  We have been delivering services to local authorities and private care providers whilst developing study material that will enable the acquisition of knowledge and skills within students embarking upon qualifications with Macmillan Centre for Learning.

As part of our celebration of 16 years providing quality services, we are going to begin a new chapter

Macmillan Centre for Learning is launching a Knowledge Hub for those working in people-based services.  Through a yearly subscription an individual, or organisations, can have access to materials that have been of value to our students. The resources cover a range of areas that are found within people-based services, however, can also be useful if you are interested in developing your understanding of Team needs. For a quick look, please watch: https://youtu.be/fV2wRm0mraw

Macmillan Centre for Learning is collaborating with other professionals who will contribute to the Knowledge Hub with their own material, and we will provide links to their wider services.

The Knowledge Hub will be open for subscriptions from April 2024.  If you are interested,

Student Comments

I have thoroughly enjoyed completing my HNC with the Macmillan Centre for Learning, I feel that by doing the HNC my way of thinking has changed in the way I work with the young people this is due to the knowledge I have gained during the process of the assessments. In the last year I do feel that my confidence has grown considerably and feel that I contribute more to my staff team as well as the young people I work with. The teaching styles and methods that Malcolm has provided have been excellent; he has been very supportive and always available through technology if a problem arises. I am now more aware of the possible routes I can take in my learning and Malcolm has been very encouraging of this and helped to build my confidence in the ability that I have.”

Lynn (Student) 2010

“Since I have started doing the HNC course through Macmillan Centre for Learning, I have learnt a great deal about theory and practice within social care. This has given me confidence in the workplace and I am more confident when attending meetings. Malcolm has a lot of patience and it is down to his method of teaching I have managed to get through the course.”

Ally (Student) 2010

Both students above have gone on to achieve the Social Work Degree.

"With regards to HNC Training, this was very important to myself, to help me gain a better understanding of the due diligence and thought processes we need when working with a variety of Service Users, and the developmental stages of their lives.

Without having the background knowledge and theories I would not be able to deliver the correct care towards the indivisualised Young Person as each one is very different within their own mindset.

Having the HNC Qualification will let me become more positive with decision making, as I will be able to back this up with my thought processes and the continuous training which has been implemented in me, over a wide variety of subjects relevant to each service user."

Darrell (Student) 2016

Agency Comments

"We have had a first class service from MCL and have had no cause for complaint. Students have been well supported and communications between yourselves and our agency have been excellent. Having the HNC/SVQIII provided "on-site" gives our students a much better opportunity and they appreciate not having to travel or go back to a school setting where previous experiences may not have been positive.

With your dedicated support we now have many qualified workers striving to go further. We cannot recommend MCL highly enough for the services delivered and would like to thank you for your on-going commitment and service you give to us."

Welcome

Welcome to the Macmillan Centre for Learning, based in Aberdeenshire in the North East of Scotland.

The Centre was borne out of a desire to meet the needs of the social care sector, identifying continuing professional development and offering diversity in the meeting of statutory training requirements. The Centre offers the opportunity to participate in a mode of learning that motivates the learner to reach their potential and develop their skill and for the benefit of the service and service user.  Through the use of traditional methods of training and the integration of technology we offer the support and encouragement any learner needs as they embark upon a new journey of discovery.

The Centre also uses the open source Moodle facility to provide resources within a Virtual Learning Environment that will be accessed by Students only.  This facility offers Students access to video and audio teaching to support any direct teaching that has been set in place for them.  A range of subjects have been identified by SQA as the key components of Social Care, therefore, workbooks have been made accessible for Students to enable a depth of understanding of key concepts and theories to underpin the experience and practice the Students bring.
