Qualification Application Process
The Macmillan Centre for Learning’s Qualification Application Process (MCL QAP) ensures that all applicants possess the appropriate academic background, practice experience, and professional readiness to undertake their chosen Award at the correct SCQF level. The process is designed to confirm three essential factors:
- Eligibility and role relevance (the applicant must be working in, or entering, a role that allows them to generate the evidence required for the Award).
- Commitment and capacity to meet the academic, professional, and time‑bound requirements of the qualification.
- Professional readiness in line with the National Occupational Standards, the SSSC Codes of Practice, and the expectations of SCQF‑level learning.
The Journey to Qualification
Your Path to a Professional Qualification
The MCL QAP consists of three stages, each with a distinct purpose. This is a transparent, three-stage process designed to match your experience with the right SCQF level.

The Process: Step-by-Step
MCLQAP Stage 1: The Initial Application

- What happens: You’ll submit your formal application detailing your educational background and work history.
- What we look for: Completeness and clarity. Ensure your experience details are up to date.
MCLQAP Stage 2: Readiness & SCQF Level Assessment

- What happens: Our academic team reviews your eligibility against the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).
- The Goal: To ensure the qualification level (Levels 1–12) is appropriate for your current skills and knowledge.
MCLQAP Stage 3: The Interview

- What happens: You complete the Interview Questions Form that will then be used in your 30-minute professional conversation focused on “Knowledge to Practice Authentication.”
- The Goal: We verify that your theoretical knowledge translates into real-world practice. It’s an opportunity to validate your evidence through dialogue.
Understanding Your Outcome

There are four possible outcomes to the process. Applicants will find below an explanation, so applicants understand that “Redirect” or “Defer” are supportive measures, not just “rejections.”
| Result | What it means |
| Accept | You meet all criteria and are ready to begin your qualification. |
| Defer | You have potential but need more time to gather specific experience and knowledge. |
| Redirect | We have identified a different pathway or level that better suits your profile. |
| Not Accept | Current requirements have not been met at this time. |
